Calm Waters Continues Virtual Student Grief Support Groups Despite the Pandemic and School Closures
Drive-thru party for support group graduates: Monday, June 8, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Oklahoma City, OK, June 5 – Calm Waters Center for Children and Families, the only grief center in Central Oklahoma offering free grief support services to children and families, is providing six weeks of Virtual Student Support Groups for any child, pre-K – 12, who has experienced loss including death, divorce, foster care/adoption, military deployment, incarceration or deportation. At the end of each support group series, families receive activity kits that include supplies to create memory jars, sensory tools, family photo albums. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, Calm Waters is inviting each family to a drive through party on Monday, June 8, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Calm Waters parking lot at 4334 NW Expressway to collect drinks, snacks and the complimentary activity kits, to celebrate the culmination of their support group.
The continued goal of Calm Waters’ student support groups is to help children process their feelings and grief experiences and teach coping skills that can positively impact behavior and achievement.
The next Virtual Student Support Group series begins the week of June 22 and ends the last week of July. Parents and guardians can register their children for the June 22 support group series at www.calmwaters.org/programs/school-groups.
“When schools closed in March 2020, almost 1,500 children in Calm Waters student support groups across the greater Oklahoma City metro area were left behind, alone in their grief,” said Erin Engelke, Calm Waters’ Executive Director. “Because of the generosity of a special COVID-19 grant from the United Way of Central Oklahoma, Calm Waters is providing renewed grief support services directly to ANY student whose grief and feelings of isolation have compounded by the cancelation of schools and the shut-down of their community.”
Each Virtual Student Support Group includes up to eight children segmented by developmental age and all sessions are are led by a highly trained grief group facilitator.
During the drive thru party, Calm Waters therapists and leadership (and possibly parents of the children Calm Waters serves) will be available for interviews to discuss children’s grief and the ongoing virtual student support groups.
