Calm Waters Now Offering Trauma-Sensitive Yoga Classes
OKLAHOMA CITY, OK, August 26, 2021 – Calm Waters Center for Children and Families, the only grief center in Oklahoma City offering free grief support services to the entire family, introduces Trauma-Sensitive Yoga classes for those over 13 years of age and female-identifying. Classes are 6 p.m. every Tuesday evening at Calm Waters Center located at 501 N. Walker, Suite 140 in Oklahoma City. Classes are $40 a month.
Each Trauma-Sensitive Yoga class will be led by Heather Warfield, LMFT, Calm Waters’ Clinical Director, and who has been trained in the Trauma Center’s Trauma-Sensitive Yoga, (TCTSY). All abilities are welcome and movement options will be provided throughout the session.
“In order to heal from grief and trauma, both the body AND mind need to heal,” said Warfield. Whether the loss was sudden or anticipated, traumatic or not, grief affects a person’s whole self, and symptoms can include headaches, body aches, nausea, muscle tension, heaviness in the chest, and loss of appetite.”
Benefits of a Trauma-Sensitive yoga class can include body empowerment, a reduction in physiological symptoms, and an increased sense of safety within self and others.
Trauma-Sensitive yoga is based within clinic intervention for Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder with foundations in Trauma Theory and Attachment Theory. Elements of the Hatha style of yoga are modified to restore the connection of mind and body and cultivate a sense of agency that is often compromised as a result of trauma.
