Calm Waters Moves Parenting Classes Online Due to Evolving COVID-19 Health Crisis
4-hour, court-mandated parenting classes are now virtual
Oklahoma City, OK – Calm Waters Center for Children and Families, the only grief center in Central Oklahoma offering free grief support services to children and families, has moved all April and May Parenting Through Divorce seminars online due to the evolving COVID-19 health crisis.
Oklahoma State House Bill 2249 requires divorcing and separating parents with children under the age of 18 to attend an educational program concerning the impact of divorce on children, and this four-hour seminar meets court requirements. The seminar is designed to help parents learn how to co-parent, reduce conflict and increase communication with each other and with the children involved.
After enrolling online, seminar registrants will be provided with online tools such as ZOOM, online surveys and quizzes.
Calm Waters has reached out to Oklahoma, Canadian and Cleveland County courts concerning acceptance of online classes. As of April 14:
- All Oklahoma County judges will accept online parenting classes until the Courts re-open.
- The following Cleveland County judges are accepting online parenting classes: Judge Balkman, Judge Puckett, Judge Virgin and Judge Walkley.
- All Canadian County Judges will accept online parenting classes until the Courts re-open.
In addition to Calm Waters’ due diligence with many county judges, the nonprofit urges each parent to ensure that the county judge presiding over their case has temporarily approved online parenting classes.
In-person parenting classes will resume in June 2020, unless updated guidance is issued from the Oklahoma Governor’s office.
