The Virtual Student Support Group Page

A Welcome from Jordan Park,

LMFT-candidate and Assistant Program Director

Guardians and Parents,

On behalf of Calm Waters, welcome! We are honored to serve your child(ren) and family on your grief journey through our Virtual Student Grief Support program. The continued goal of our support groups is to teach students coping skills that they will utilize for the rest of their lives and to answer hard questions about grief and loss during a child’s formative years.

This page provides an overview of each support group session’s weekly topic and additional resources for parents and guardians. If you have any questions or would like to request a phone call, please email me at jordan@calmwaters.org.

Session Topics

Session 1: Getting Started

Curriculum available the week of May 4.

In this session, participants will learn the rules of their support group and how to begin each session by stating your name, why you are here and what emotion you are feeling today. Students will get to know each other and learn about everyone’s unique qualities and what they may have in common.

Session 2: Emotions

Curriculum available the week of May 11.

In this session, participants learn how to identify different emotions and how to communicate to their loved ones how these sometimes complicated emotions make them feel. Many emotions come with loss and all emotions are okay to feel.

Calm Waters has two rules about emotions.

1) You cannot emotionally, verbally or physically hurt yourself.

2) You cannot emotionally, verbally or physically hurt someone else.

Session 3: Anger

Curriculum available the week of May 18.

Anger, a common feeling in the grief journey, often masks other emotions. This week, participants will focus on unpacking and exploring past anger.

Session 4: Change

Curriculum available the week of May 25.

In this session, participants will discuss the losses in their lives that have caused change, and how to process, cope and grow from this change.

Session 5: Support

Curriculum available the week of June 1.

In this session, participants identify who in their lives can and will listen and support them through their grief journey and how to support themselves with various coping skills, mindfulness and grounding techniques using our our five senses.

Session 6: What now?

Curriculum available the week of June 8.

In this session, we review past session topics and discuss how new coping skills learned during this series has impacted each student’s grief journey and then the group will complete one of the hands-on activity kits.
